I just learned tonight that if you are a registered voter in New York State who wants to change party affiiliation to vote in a primary next year (for example, to vote for Howard Dean), you have to submit the change by October 1. Apparently the election law in New York State is such that changes in affiliation are only processed once per year after the general election.
