- The INS ruled (Jan 4) that Elian Gonzalez should be returned to his father in Cuba. In the New York Times, the INS said it was "the right decision legally, the right decision morally."
- A story appeared in the Times about John McCain writing letters to the FCC seeking quick action on a matter involving Paxon Communications, owned by a major contributor to his campaign. The letter did not appear to suggest that the FCC rule in a particular way on the question, but the head of the FCC raised questions of propriety nonetheless. George Bush on the subject: "I think somebody who makes campaign finance an issue has got to be consistent, and walk the walk,'' Bush said at a New Hampshire campaign appearance.
